Macallan 78 Year Old Red Collection Description The Red Collection is an exquisite range of distinguished and rare single malt scotch whiskies which capture The Macallan’s deep respect for tradition and craftsmanship. The distinctive red colour is inspired by The Macallan ‘Choice Old’ range, released over a century ago in 1903, and brought to life by beautiful illustrations by acclaimed Spanish painter and illustrator Javi Aznarez. The Macallan 78 Year Old is a sherried single malt and is bottled at 42.2% abv. The nose has a fresh fruit medley of apple, peach and grape moving into fresh lime and verbena. Warming oak spice of nutmeg and ginger open into rich dried fruits on the palate, with a powerful treacle toffee and baked apple sweetness. All of the flavours from the nose and taste appear in the remarkable finish. The red thread begins with Alexander Reid, the farmer and teacher who founded The Macallan in 1824. Taking up residence at Easter Elchies in the late 1700s, he transformed the estate from a small farming community into a world-renowned distiller. His surname Reid is a name of Scottish origin, meaning ‘the red one’ and was originally associated with red hair.
